Damien Hirst seduces Mexico City

Exhibition view of the 3rd gallery at Museo Jumex.

TOUR: Damien Hirst, one of the most recognized (and controversial) names in the global contemporary art scene, arrived in Mexico City with two exhibitions (and we prepared a tour for you, more info below):

  • To Live Forever (For a While) at the Jumex Museum

  • March 23 to August 25, 2024.

  • New Spot Paintings and a Hundred Years at the Hilario Galguera Gallery

  • April 5 to July 12, 2024.

However, his status as one of the most famous artists is no mere coincidence. Throughout his career, Hirst has dedicated himself to developing marketing strategies parallel to his artistic production, precisely to eventually become one of the wealthiest living artists in the world.

His most expensive piece has been The Golden Calf, which sold for £10.3 million through the auction house Sotheby’s in September 2018, according to Joe Ayer, co-founder and specialist at MyArtBroker.

We know that the Museo Jumex has become the international reference point for contemporary art in Mexico, so it should not surprise us that, although this piece will not be found in either of these two exhibitions, we do find highly interesting pieces from private collections of great importance in To Live Forever (For a While).

Damien Hirst, For the Love of God, 2007, platinum, diamonds and human teeth. Private colection.

This exhibition "presents a survey of some of Hirst’s most significant works and series, in all their diversity, confronting us in ways that prove at times provoking as well as captivating" as mentioned by Adriana Kuri Alamillo in the exhibition booklet published by the Jumex Contemporary Art Foundation.

However, it wouldn't be Hirst without also seizing the market, wouldn't it? In addition to being an artist, he considers himself an entrepreneur, so his vision goes beyond the institutional recognition that an exhibition like that of the Museo Jumex can provide.

Galería Hilario Galguera, after more than 10 years of presenting an individual exhibition dedicated to the artist, managed to bring him back under the direction of Víctor Mendoza, in which new pieces from the Spot Paintings series are presented, as well as three installations, among which A Hundred Years stands out (hence the name of the exhibition).

The fact that the artist has presented not just one, but two exhibitions in Mexico is a unique opportunity. That's why RF has prepared a tour for you, in which you can immerse yourself in the artist's world accompanied by an expert who will explain everything about his work and his pieces.
